'KILLER' ECSTASY CLAIM BASED ON WRONG DRUG

Words: Terry Church

US research suggesting that one tablet of ecstasy could be enough to cause serious long-term damage to humans was actually based on the wrong drug, it has been revealed.

Government sponsored Professor George Ricuarte, America's leading ecstasy expert, accidentally injected monkeys with methamphetamine – instead of MDMA – which is a far more potent drug. Two out of the ten monkeys then died, and another two suffered severe brain damage. These findings were published as proof of the potential long-term damage of ecstasy in humans, when in fact no MDMA had actually been tested. His findings however, were labelled as ‘completely false’ after the serious blunder was revealed.

This episode may have caused irreversible damage to the credibility of scientists researching drug-effects, and will certainly lead to more scepticism amongst recreational ecstasy users. More worrying however is the fact that such seriously flawed research could ever reach the public domain.

Well, one thing I would like to say for the scientists, think of how many drugs are tested every day by so many different people. One of them, somewhere along the line is bound to mess up at some point. But they should have realized thier mistake far before releasing any results.
