how did the parties become so wrong...
zander83 Posted: Thu Jun 10 18:51:14 2004 Post | Quote in Reply
reading over the party platforms for the coming elections i realised why i am so apathetic to the whole thing. there are no parties which represent me. economically im conservative(libertarian), id be happy to cut taxes, cut basically all non-essential programs(medicare, welfare) etc. At the same time however, i approve of gay marriage, im pro-choice etc. i can't stand voting for a party that includes creationism in one of its press releases but at the same time i can vote for a party that would expand government services and collect more taxes...

so who do i vote for, and how is it that fiscally conservative became unanimous with insane christian...

  Simple solution.

Show up to the voting booth, go inside, spin around ten times with your eyes closed, and then let yourself fall in different directions for about a minute. Then open your eyes and look at what button you press or lever you grabbed onto to maintain balance.

Democracy in action.

On the original subject: nobody representing you? Represent yourself or leave. Democracy would be a good idea if it weren't for all the people whose opinions shouldn't count but do when it's time to vote.

Do the parties in your country, wherever you live, have colours?

Over here every party has it's own colour

liberals are blue
conservatives are brown
socialists are red (socialists would be the liberals in america I think)
christian democrates are orange
the ecological party is green

and so on.

Since I noticed some differences between my view of liberalism and the american view I did some (very quick) research on it.

Here goes:

As a political tradition liberalism has varied in different countries. In England the liberal tradition in politics has centred on religious toleration, government by consent, personal and, especially, economic freedom. In France liberalism has been more closely associated with secularism and democracy. In the United States liberals often combine a devotion to personal liberty with an antipathy to capitalism, while the liberalism of Australia tends to be much more sympathetic to capitalism but often less enthusiastic about civil liberties.

Now, in Belgium the Liberal party is center-right, capitalistic and focuses for the most part on economic freedom/success along with personal freedom (which includes complete freedom of speech).

Just so you'd know lol.

In terms of ideology I'm a liberal in the "true sense" of the word (as it started out historicly) but I don't think I fit in the american notion of "a liberal".
