what you have to believe to be...
libra Posted: Tue Jun 15 16:48:38 2004 Post | Quote in Reply
I figured we have to keep up our quota of a religious discussion thread and a political thread...so here's something fun to read...

Things you have to believe to be a Republican today:

1. Being a drug addict is a moral failing and a crime, unless you're a conservative radio host. Then it's an illness and you need our prayers for your recovery.

2. The United States should get out of the United Nations, and our highest national priority is enforcing U.N. resolutions against Iraq.

3. Government should relax regulation of Big Business and Big Money but crack down on individuals who use marijuana to relieve the pain of illness.

4. "Standing Tall for America'" means firing your workers and moving their jobs to India.

5. A woman can't be trusted with decisions about her own body, but multi-national corporations can make ecisions affecting all mankind without regulation.

6. Jesus loves you and shares your atred of homosexuals and Hillary Clinton.

7. The best way to improve military morale is to praise the troops in speeches while slashing veterans' benefits and combat pay.

8. Group sex and drug use are degenerate sins unless you someday run for governor of California as a Republican.

9. If condoms are kept out of schools, adolescents won't have sex.

10. A good way to fight terrorism is to belittle our long-time allies, then demand their cooperation and money.

11. HMOs and insurance companies have the interest of the public at heart.

12. Providing health care to all Iraqis is sound policy. Providing health care to all Americans is socialism.

13. Global warming and tobacco's link to cancer are junk science, but creationism should be taught in schools.

14. Saddam was a good guy when Reagan armed him, a bad guy when Bush's daddy made war on him, a good guy when Cheney did business with him and a bad guy when Bush needed a "we can't find Bin Laden" diversion.

15. A president lying about an extramarital affair is an impeachable offense. A president lying to enlist support for a war in which thousands die is solid defense policy.

16. Government should limit itself to the powers named in the Constitution, which include banning gay marriages and censoring the Internet.

17. The public has a right to know about Hillary's cattle trades, but George Bush's driving record is none of our business.

18. You support states' rights, which means Attorney General John Ashcroft can tell states what local voter initiatives they have a right to adopt.

19. What Bill Clinton did in the 1960s is of vital national interest, but what Bush did in the '80s is irrelevant.

20. Trade with Cuba is wrong because the country is communist, but trade with China and Vietnam is vital to a spirit of international harmony.

hif? we've been enemies about this subject for a long long time...one of the first arguments I had on GT was with hif over some political issue...but now i stay away from it, cause it'll never go anywhere. I'm far too stubborn and you can't argue with a republican... ;)

Sounds pretty much like me... LOL.. The first of my posts was to rebate some idiocy of republicanism (or however you say it) that hif had said... And I think he truly hated me for it... LOL

Haha hif doesn't hate you as a person he hates what you say ;o)

Play the ball, not the player.

Mere technicality Christophe, and even low for your standards, may I add.

It's like saying "Hate the sin, not the sinner"

One goes hand in hand with the other.

Your opinions generally reflect your actions, so if you say you support incest, it most likely means you either do it or seriously consider doing it.

In my views, that makes you hateable too.

  Hmm.

You have a good point although from experience I know that it is much more effective to undermine somebody's statements than make irrelevant comments about the person in question when you're debating.

If you want to start throwing mud it is best to know what you're doing and to know who you're up against and what they know about you or it could quickly turn on you.

Especially when you're debating in front of a group and you're trying to get them to your side.

  21. Republicans have to believe that it is wrong to criticize a president about a war unless it's Clinton dealing with Serbia.

careful here.
I support a persons right to burn the flag as a symbol of protest over a given policy of our government.
I would not go out and burn one myself in any protest though. Opinions do not necessarily reflect actions

Everyone here knows I am at the opposite end of the spectrum with hif on politics. He drives me bonkers sometimes! But I also know he is a decent caring human that I share many other things in common with. If we were neighbors would we be best buds? Probably not, but I'd like to think we'd respect each others differing views and still be friends in some capacity.
I differ with hif, christophe, asswipe, marsteller, JAZER, Casper, Trogdor and many others on certain subjects, but this place would be less if they weren't here making me think and question why i believe what i believe.

I wasn't trying to get anyone on my side, and I wasn't referring to you when I mentioned incest... Since you were so quick to rebutt my statement, however, if the shoe fits...

And I wasnt referring to political views either, Addison, I was referring to the things that are truly bad, like incest, rape, homicide, drug dealing.

I do not agree with the views muslims have about homosexuality, but I respect them, and I do not discuss my sexuality openly with them because I respect their religion.

I know, and I'm not trying to pick a fight with you either. We're on the same page...
...However, to many here on the scale of bad things people can do, burning the American flag is on par with drug dealing, rape, etc...(really and truely!)
you stated that opinions generally reflect actions and i just wanted to be a dink and point out that it's not always the case.

I understand where you're coming from, but, however, burning the flag is permitted under your constitution (if you're american), but here in Mexico, it's considered high treason against your country... Which is why I say I understand where you're coming from... But that doesn't hurt -anybody physically-, vs. maybe hurting some people's feelings...
