What's your favorite animal?
erikagm Posted: Thu Jun 17 13:59:07 2004 Post | Quote in Reply
My favorite animals are cats in general... I totally adore their haughtiness and the way they have a complete disregard for us humans... LOL

I also like all sorts of reptiles, as long as they're not poisonous, mind you...

As for dogs... I pretty much only like miniature schnauzers...

The best animal is the kangaroo, and I thought that even before I heard how the kangaroo got its name (or so I've been told).

When the Europeans went to Australia they met the Aborigines and asked them what that creature was (while pointing toward a kangaroo). The tribe said 'kangaroo,' which in their language means 'I don't know.'

Don't hold me to this.

I think I had heard that before... LOL

And yes, I think you're right as to how it got its name...

I pretty much like anything furry, but my all-time favs are cats...

Although for some reason, all my cats strangely think they're dogs... They come when called, they jump up into your arms at voice commands... Weird... LOL

My cats tend to be, well cats. As in, the only times they ever sit on my lap are when I'm reading or eating. They have an extra sense that tells them when you want them to be around, and that's when they sleep.

erikagm Posted: Thu Jun 17 14:15:59 2004 Post | Quote in Reply
LOL I know what you mean... I've had such strange pets...

I had a siamese cat who refused to eat anything but steamed vegetables... And used to lap at the water in the goldfish bowl... (cat version of fish soup?)

I had another cat who ate his regular act food, but LOVED melon (cantelope) and banana.

Then there was the cat who only liked the chicken-leg shaped kibble bits and used to separate them by putting his paw in the bowl and making all the little pieces fly all over the place and then just eat the ones he liked.

Cat-dogs are cool, especially when they don't smell bad.

I like lemurs. I saw one at the zoo, last week, licking it's ass. I'd've liked to have a camera.

But time traveling alien space monkeys are the best.

If they were real, ewoks would be on my list too, but since they are highly intelligent lifeforms, I wouldn't consider them "animals" per se.

For that same reason I don't consider "humans" my favorite animals, although they're my favorite species!

(especially the female specimens... LOL)

You don't see humans as being an animal?

Some apes are highly intelligent as well and have the intelligence of a 5->7 year old.

Are they above other animals as well?

Where is the cut-off line? How intelligent must one be before they're no longer an animal?

>For that same reason I don't consider "humans" my favorite animals, although they're my favorite species!
I know many that I would call animals.

*** I don't really know... I'll have to give that some thought... I guess if I try to define it right now I would say I would start defining them as "highly intelligent" once the majority of the species can read and write (which is considered the pinnacle of our evolution) once they reach maturity.

>>For that same reason I don't consider "humans" my favorite animals, although they're my favorite species!

*** I do too, but I was talking about the -majority- of the species... Thankfully the majority isn't that way...

So you made up your mind before you put any real thought into it? Interesting.

Read and write? An ape called "Kanzi" has learned to communicate with her keepers through the use of a keyboard with pictograms on it that play words when she presses them. She has learned to form sentences and describe abstract things and has learned to respond very precisely to questions that she was asked.

Also, she is passing it on herself to her offspring without meddling of the keepers.

One day she took a crayon and drawed some of her word-symbols on the floor. Don't remember the sentence, but it comes down to reading and writing.

So again, is that ape not an animal?

Don't you "believe" in evolution? Tell me if you do, how people can ever be something else than an animal.

Now that I've given it some thought... I would stick to my original comment about reading/writing, but adding the comment that the reading/writing would have to be an advanced form of reading/writing... To me the cromagnon man was no more a "highly intelligent lifeform" than a chimp is. Sure, they drew nice little pictures on walls, but it didn't go further than that.

Oh... and one more thing... If it's a species named by man, it would have to have the term "sapiens" added to the end of its species classification

LOL

Ok let me make the following correction then...

That the species have the -capacity- to read/write at an advanced level once they reach maturity.

Because, as you most correctly pointed out, some people can't do it, but they -do- have the capacity for it.

Like the ape I described?

And what about people who don't know how to read or write, are they animals but you are above them because you can read/write?

>Oh... and one more thing... If it's a species named by man, it would have to have the term "sapiens" added to the end of its species classification

So what puts people above animals is the name?

The sapiens is just another species name like lupus, carcharidon, and equus.

So does the ape.

Describing abstract things is something I'd call pretty advanced writing.

not sure how many actual black scorpions you will find, but they do have some pretty awesome tribal work, among other things.

There's lots to look through, and it is updated constantly.

Hello, I'm back. Still didn't manage to get much sleep but I suppose it's good that I started trying when I did.
Ah ha! *downloads meshuggah's avatar* Bwahahaha!
I love cats, my cats are psychos and I love them to bits. I used to be able to walk down the paths and through the woods with three or four cats following me, it was really funny.
I think I'm a bad example, all my pets are crazy.

Oh well, at least when hes hyper he is still well behaved and doesnt tear anything up.
