Especially the ones who haven't had any relief, the ones who left out of exhaustion, and the couple who committed suicide.

I especially like the mercenary company that has been brought in.

The United States government. It's the same contractor that's being used to guard oil thingees in Iraq.

I wonder which company will be chosen "at random" to get the big rebuilding contracts.

They will all be local contractors for the most part.

Yup..local Houston contractors with direct ties to the Bush administration and vice pres Cheney.
No bid contracts too. Shocking! They were awarded to Halliburton, Bechtel National Inc, and it's subsidiaries faster than you could say "cronism". Yes, the same Hallibuton that's already earned more than 9 billion dollars from the Iraq war (audits done in June showed $1.03 billion in "questioned" costs and $422 million in "unsupported" costs for Halliburton's work in Iraq).

No doubt some local small companies will get some left over scraps of construction jobs thrown their way if they get on their knees and beg, but the major clean up jobs have already been awarded to those with strong ties to this administration.

What a sad joke this all is.

The counter to that is the Onion is joke paper. Opposed to, say, CNN

http://www.cnn.com/2005/POLITICS/09/10/katrina.contracts.reut/
Or the AP
http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20050904/ap_on_bi_ge/katrina_halliburton_hk3_1

But technically, it being a Houston-based company makes it local, right? Right???

Well..if it didn't come from Fox News then it's all unsubstantiated lies spread by the liberal media!

: )

Really, what's worse than Halliburton being brought in, is the company that has the no bid contract and is handling the human remain. They have direct ties to President.

The "professionals who gather the dead, treat them with respect and prepare them for their rest" (quote from Thursday's speech_ are being sued and charged in both Florida and Texas for mistreating the dead, from something like '99 to '02. Forging creamains (a real world, thank you Six Feet Under) to dumping bodies in swamps to putting two bodies in one coffin to poor preservation and mausoleum upkeep (there was 'leaking' and a 'strange red fluid' in one instance in Texas)
Here's one article, from after the 2000 election and before 9-11 (look at all the now familiar names)

One about the recent-as-of-this-week happenings about SCI and their subsiderary Kenyon International

Oh those dastardly republicans, sending help to those in need !

Kathleen Blanco is on record as stating that reconstruction in her state will not necessarily go to the lowest bidder, but to Louisiana contractors.
Halliburton does not build houses, apartments and commercial buildings.
