Needing a favor
Posted: Fri Mar 3 23:03:45 2006 Post | Quote in Reply
Hi plinkers and plonkers and dudes and dudettes and addi and hif!

I need a favor. I am currently in the process of launching my next site (not going to be replacing http://philrenaud.com , just adding to it), and I would really like some input as to your impressions of the site design. User experience is a very big deal for me on this particular site.

the address is http://thepersuasion.com
Title: The Persuasion: How to Win Arguments and Influence People

(note that the text is currently just filler, and only the menu links work at the moment. I mostly just want responses based on your impression of the design)

Specifically, I'm looking for responses to the following:

a) Is the design scheme intuitive? that is, do you spend an extravagant amount of time looking for elements (menu items, etc) or are things evident enough?

b) Is the font-size too large?

b.2) Do you/Will you make use of the text-size changer (in the top-bar menu; the bit T and little t)?

c) Would you prefer that a reverse-contrast style (example: http://thepersuasion.com/contrast.html ) be available, much in the same way that the font-size switcher is available?

d) judging from what's written on http://thepersuasion.com/information.php , can you see yourself being interested enough in the subject matter to read the blog?

Please, I'd like as many responses as possible; I really want this new site to work.

Thanks so much in advance!

---
PS: for anybody worried that the site looks a little too old-style web, no worries: I think it just better represents the subject matter and userbase better than some of my new-web-style designs(such as http://mixtaping.com , http://thehappybutterfly.ca )

Thanks a bunch, again.

well being an amiture webmaster i dont have much skill at this but from wat i can see:
good scheme and easy to navigate,
font isnt to big,
i didnt know that u could do that with the text and yes i probly would use it,
i dont see the difference between the regular and contrasted one,
and yes that is exactly the kind of thing u would find me reading.
i like it.

To tell you the truth, I actually liked the contrast version better. Seemed to make the text stick out...which for a blog is most important. Site design is well laid out, simple, yet it looks good. We spend all day reading tiny text, so the large text (as seen on "The Best Page in the Universe) works well. My two Canadian cents. Or 1.69 American cents.

I'm not sure how to take this greeting...perhaps it's a canadian custom to single out the handsome, intelligent ones out of respect : )

I like the layout. It's easy to read with the font size and there aren't a lot of visual distractions. Good job.

my only complaint is that you wrote about drinking flavored coffee. Guys that go for "hazelnut vanilla almond capachino delight", and not straight brew, make me nervous in elevators.

They make me even more nervous in bed. It's like, hey, hands off buddy!

Crim, I'm tired but I'll say I think it is pretty easy to go through and not hard to read at all. And I like the contrasted page better, personally. Just a tad. And arguing is always a good thing to read on.

Oh but I don't like the stuff at the bottom being in black. But it's no big deal, either.

I don't know why but I really didn't like that page. It looks too... normal I guess. The contrast is a bit better but not much.
Maybe it's the red that turns me off?
I like the text size, easy to read helps make me want to read.
After looking at the page for a good long time I've decided that I want something on the borders, pictures, definitions, swirllies, something. Space on a web page is good, I'll agree with you there, but I feel like there's too much right now.
I do like that the other articles are listed at the bottom rather then the sides like other blogs.

I'm going to confess that I check to your blog every day, I enjoy the way you write and how your mind works, I really love the way you've got http://philrenaud.com/ set up. Reading these articles on that page made me smile, wonder about you, and somedays think. I've sited some of your blog entries in my philosophy and physiology classes in presentations as examples of an idea or to argue a point, they're good interesting thoughts that you have, but seeing them at http://thepersuasion.com/ I wouldn't even read them. To me this new site of yours isn't very interesting (though the subject matter is.)

Nothing?
http://thepersuasion.com/index.html vs. http://thepersuasion.com/contrast.html ? no difference?

What browser/OS are you using?

That made me grin from ear to ear, thank you :)

but seeing them at http://thepersuasion.com/ I wouldn't even read them. To me this new site of yours isn't very interesting (though the subject matter is.)

I'm thinking maybe that, since I'm playing with style switching anyway (the thing that changes the font size automatically), I may as well include a different look to the site. http://csszengarden.com has examples of this being done: same content, different styles.

Maybe something closer to philrenaud.com's current look?

Hm. Trying to generate a crowd at The Persuasion might be kind of difficult. I'm definitely not going to stop (or slow down) blogging at philrenaud.com ; I just wanted a place for another creative output, I guess.

Thanks for your responses, everybody. Keep em' coming if you haven't, yet!

hmm, very strange. it worked fine for me earlier today, but now when i tried your link both pages come out like the original.

strange. I'm using explorer. i think the problem may well be your end..

I agree with all the above points. i like the font size, though i wouldn't have realised the t buttons changed it.

I'm not trying to steal your thunder, Crim, but I didn't want to dedicate a new thread to this.
You inspired me to get off my lazy ass and update my neglected site...so I added a new page of tunes. If you click on the "even more" link you'll see them.

I don't even pretend to be in your web building league, Phil. I use a program through my IP that's made for HTML morons like myself. I'm hoping for some exposure, not web design awards.

okay, I figured it out, I think: Using the font-size switcher to keep the font smaller, and accessing http://thepersuasion.com/contrast.html will make it look no different from the regular blackfont/whitebg version. Try using big-text on contrast.html

The final setup will have this fixed.

I found everything fast and easily, it's a very good design.

No.

Probably not, I rather like the font size, but I still think that feature is totally cool.

>c) Would you prefer that a reverse-contrast style (example: http://thepersuasion.com/contrast.html ) be available, much in the same way that the font-size switcher is available?

Yeah, sure. I would probably pick one and just read it like that all the time, but it's nice to be able to pick what you like best.

>d) judging from what's written on http://thepersuasion.com/information.php , can you see yourself being interested enough in the subject matter to read the blog?

I'm not one to visit any one website with a great deal of regularity (except GT), but yours is one that is easy and interesting enough that I would visit fairly often.
