I'm looking for good melodies or good lyrics; funny or serious.

It's not as much the genre as the kind of "atmosphere" of the songs that I'm looking for.

I want songs that everybody knows the lyrics to when you play them at a party for example, or everybody knows the melody

The Arcade Fire - Wake Up
Anything by the Decemberists. I especially suggest Odalisque. Their sea shanties are also good (The Mariner's Revenge Songs, A Cautionary Tale)
Poe - Haunted, Hey Pretty
Jem - They, 24, and Come on Closer
The Fiery Furnaces - Blueberry Boat
The Who - Won't Get Fooled Again
Dave Matthews - Grey Street, Too High, The Stone, Crush
