Bangkok - Malaysia - Singapore (Or Vice-Versa)
JesusOnline Posted: Wed Nov 8 20:34:53 2006 Post | Quote in Reply
I'm planning a small break from work in the New Year.

My basic plan is pretty much set.
- Flight to Bangkok and a week or so there.
- Travel through Malaysia over the course of about 3 weeks
- Stay in Singapore for a week or so before returning to the UK from here.
* It may go vice versa and start in Singapore end in Bangkok possibly *

The point in this thread is that while I have places in mind I'd like to visit while travelling through Malaysia - i.e. The Cameron Highlands, Koh Phangan - as much as I can find online I'm hoping for some first hand info from those GTers who've visited and/or live in this part of the world if there is anywhere which you feel I absolutely must go to, anything I should do.

You won't need a week in Singapore. 3 - 4 days should do nicely. You should check out the Zoo, and if you're into clubbing, Ministry of Sound and the newly opened St. James Power Station.

In Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur should be your main stop. Cameron Highlands is relaxed and laid back (read: boring). Genting Highlands (2-3 days, one-hour taxi ride from KL) would be more interesting, but only if you're into amusement rides and casinos. If you have time for a 3-day side-trip, take a domestic flight to Langkawi where they have great resorts and beaches. Be sure to rent a car or bike and explore the island on your own.

Chanz should be better able to advise you on the other islands you should visit in Malaysia.

  poh phanhan is fun.
don't waste your time in cameron highlands and genting as cameron highlands is just a hill. u'll do better exploring thailand with those days.
genting is another casino, so don't really bother.
try penang or malacca instead.
JQ is right. a week in singapore is way too long.
4-5 days is enough
(one day to shop. one day to eat. one day for the zoo and night safari. one day for sentosa. ->that's for tourists)
however if u scrap sentosa and explore places like little india, haji lane, chinatown and the quaint little places, it's more fun that way

the last time i visited cameron highlands (more than a decade back) i vomited all the way uphill and vomited all the way downhill. yep, it's not worth the time. I recommend malacca for the rustic life and food.

in singapore, ZOUK is a must!
you can google zoukclub and check out the place.
and also is it haji lane? the place near arab street where you can have a taste of turkish delights and try out the shisha.

I think you have to be 21 to do this.

*I tried shisha once. She slapped me.

  Thanks for the information.

I foresee a couple of days going to Langkawi - it looks fantastic.

I'm travelling with 2 friends - in the past our trips have been for the purpose of clubbing drinking and general debauchery.
We've decided next year to lay off the same old same old and actually do some travelling. So laid back and relaxed is fine as long as there are points of interest/fantastic scenery.

Although at the end of the trip in Singapore, I'm sure we won't be kept away from 'Ministry of Sound' 'St. James Power Station' and the like.
