Site Improvement Suggestions
webmaster Posted: Thu May 8 04:12:20 2008 Post | Quote in Reply
  Hi people

These days, I can hardly find time to update the site and so I am looking for suggestions on how to improve the site and prevent it from dying a slow death.

I am looking for ideas on how to make the site self-sustaining, probably with more user-generated content, so I would like to hear any comments or ideas any of you might have.

Thank you.

JQ

I'm going to need to do some thinking on this one, JQ. We have become somewhat of a small incestuous group, in a manner of speaking. I think there's really just a handfull of us now now post with any regularity these days...even though we have the occasional surge in DBFings, it quickly dies back down to the trickle of posters once again. I can't think of a new member that's joined in the past two years (that's stayed). Most of us here now are old timers.
I really wouldn't mind finding some tasteful way to make it more accessable to some new blood, but having said that I would hate having a gazillion new people here, where GT started becoming just like any other mega-site...bringing with it the downside of all that entails. (my god that was a run on sentence).
I've always found it interesting to read how people found this place, because it's not the easiest place to find, and even when a person does the forum section doesn't jump out at you. People have to do a little digging for themselves.

But it's your baby and I trust you to do what you think is best for GT and yourself.

I have dreaded the "slow death" scenario for some time now and every time I think about it I curse the fact that I'm not more proficient in HTML and other web languages, for I'd love the pitch in. Also I don't feel fit to make suggestions without knowing what actual maintanence would be involved with whatever I might suggest.

Suppose, for one, you put in a program (a script? arrr web lingo) that generated a new quote, taken at random from the main quote sections, on the front page every week. That's not much but at least there's a regular change.

I assume you have to check new quotes submitted under the suggest-a-new-quote thingy - and GT Question answers, too. If it would be helpful to have someone else check these things to see that there's nothing vulgar or irrelevant in them before they get put on the site, I betcha one of us (me! heh) would be willing to take on the responsibility.

Adding on to the random-quote-generator idea what if you had a program that read the quotes on myGT and put a new one up on the right side of the page {under the random articles?) upon each reload to encourage people to actually put quotes on their myGTs?

I dunno if you've ever thought about joining one of those webrings for quotes sites. I sort of dislike the idea of those little banners of theirs all along the bottom of the front page.

Un-bury Stuff I Wish For, Dreams I Dream. It's hidden away in Miscellaneous and is a classic not to be missed.

I have to agree with Libra. I wouldn’t like it to see this site change too much. It has some kind of charm this way. Plus, as addi already mentioned, many new people to this site isn’t the best thing either. I like this fine little group of youthful (minded) people and it is one of the reasons I stayed here. Still I can understand your point and it would be truly sad to see this place vanish into the deep dark realms of lost internet history.

I did notice a steep decline in the usage of MyGT. I think that’s a pity, since it is a sort of user generated content… mostly with a true personal touch. Perhaps it is possible to emphasize the usage of it.

I liked the idea of Kira for a random quote on the front page. It is indeed a small but noticeable change. How frequently it should change is of course up to you to decide, but since there is already a button for generating random quotes it might not be to hard to implement.

I do have a question for you JQ. What do you want to accomplish with this site? I mean a little more detailed than a self-sustaining quote site with user generated content. If I know what you have in mind it is easier to find possible solutions for it. (It is my job to find out what a customer wants and find the requirements and such, but I doubt you want to go through that entire process :-)

I really think GT is fine, in form & function. Still, I think addi is right, new blood and less incest is what we need (some more than others). The site layout is pretty easy to find quotes with and I actually like how the forums are completely separate (in layout, function, and actual viewing for your eyes). So yeah, new blood! Two men enter, one man leave!

Ryan North of Dinosaur Comics www.qwantz.com made a little ad-link system that seems pretty user friendly and cheap too without being obnoxious script ads.

I think perhaps the best things are the things enjoyed by a tight knit group... a group whose loyalty sustains the very thing they are addicted to. Also, let's make meth.

Okay okay...so technically you're just a few weeks under 2 years. I stand corrected : )
I just think of you as an old timer and part of the family here now I guess. Sorry

  Thank you all.

GT will always remain a labour of love. I have been a little worried that the lack of new content (sometimes months at a time) might drive some away, but now, hearing from you guys, I understand that that isn't as important as the regulars in the forum who truly make up the spirit of the site.

I am sure things will pick up eventually, and I will be quite happy to let it continue as it is. There are, anyway, only so many movies that are worth quoting.

If no one new finds the site but the regulars stay, I camp happy.

Thank you.

JQ

I was here when they turned the lights on and dammit i'll be here when they turn them off again!

I don't know what i am, in Addi's careful anthropological study of GT, a migratory member maybe, I think my attendance of late has been almost as good as it was in the golden age of Mat_J in 2004.

As for improvements, more quotes would probably help, random quote trawlers are more likely to find their way in to our sheltered cove then.

My GT has probably suffered due to the rise of myspace and facebook which mean people have the ability to create their own blogs etc.

To be honest as far as increased Traffic= more Forum migration is concerned, i say bring it on, lets shake up this one horse town!

you're the Don, the Godfather of posters here as I see it, mat_j. And you are entitled to the show of respect that comes with such a position of honor. If there are occasional discouraging words mumbled under our breath they are born from jealousy and envy.
: )

I'm deeply flattered if not slightly paranoid!
