I'm tired of reading about the Somali pirates.

How hard can it be to arm a cargo vessel, then disguise it and crew it with special forces ?

Seems to me that would be like shooting ducks in a barrel.

I think the main problem is international regulation on one hand, "those poor pirates don't have any choice"-people on the other.

Also, combatting those pirates is an expensive matter, I don't feel like any nation on its own has the responsibility to pick up the tab for it, not the US, not the EU, not whatever.

So then you get the problem of how to divide the cost, and even when it's divided you create a militarized trade highway which can never lead to anything but trouble in the long run.

The problem also isn't anything new by the way, the only difference the last few weeks is that there have been some high profile captures and the sudden hype around it. The media make it look like the whole pirate thing just popped up last week.

Well, no it isn't new, but ship captures are up 300% over all of last year.

No one complained when India sent a warship in there and sunk one of their motherships.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for going in guns blazing and shooting those looting fuckers in the head at every opportunity. I'm not a big fan of thieving and/or taking hostages and/or blackmail. I'm sure this would not need to lead to any of the people on "our" side to be exposed to any danger at all; as it's not exactly an even fight against those guys.

But you can bet that if they actually did go after them and shoot stuff up you'd have an outcry in their defence, "because they have no other options".

And on a totally unrelated note, the election aftermath:

Oh well. If they do not cease and desist, then they leave others with "no other options" but to take action.

Speaking as a former skipper of a commercial transport vessel myself* i have to agree with the hawks on this one, surely the whole point of the the G20 maintaining navies is to A. Show off the national abs to the world (ie power projection) B. assist in humanitarian crises around the world C. Protect commercial shipping (and the commercial shipping of their allies) from various oceanic threats- eg Somali Pirates.

Love this sentence!

Who exactly would say this? Who is going to defend somali pirates? this isn't the the self perpetuating war on negative emotion set about by that nasty business you had in '01. This is war on piracy and not even my most ardent of socialist buddies would support these murdering swine... maybe the neoliberals would though, never trust a neoliberal.......

Well, these particular pirates also happen to be Muslims and if we did start shooting at them, some of the liberals here would figure out a way to argue that somehow the US was responsible for their plight in life and that they had no other options because of us.
