I would offer this metaphor. Imagine two separate rooms, one man in each room. They are trapped there, alone. Each man is divided forever from the person who was most precious to him. In their isolation, they are each given an image of their loved ones. The first man is given a full-length painting, perfect in every detail, of his beloved as he best remembers her, gazing out at him from the canvas. The second man is given a window. Through it, he can see his beloved, see her move and breathe, but he cannot hear her, can never touch her, and she cannot see him.

So I would compare separation by death and separation by quarrel. At this time in my life, I truly do not know which is worse.
