feigning life
18 Aug 2002
just another mortar-board parade
on another cold, grey, and rainy day
another walk to show
how we all crumble for ceremony
like little army ants marching
to a battle they are already sure they will win
a battle that never ends
a battle that takes no prisoners
black and red they stepped
though truly green they were
right left
right left
and in time their faces will grow old
and weary with the things they've learned
things like love will die and guilt will not
and in a dozen flowers they convey love and joy
things not really felt but passed on anyway
in the glory of the day
black and red they stepped
though truly green they were
right left
right left
and eventually they will drop one by one
by the hands of god
by the hands of themselves
by the hands of each other
and they will cry once again
and they will send flowers
and they will feign life
to the nines
