He Knows (Original Screenplay)

HE KNOWS.
This is the first draft of one of the first ever screenplays i have written. My skill has improved since this was written and this perticular film was redrafted several times before it was eventuallly made as a third year project in uni.
SCENE 1 BRIDGE OVER RIVER EXT… NIGHT
A man (who looks about 20 years old) is standing over a bridge. He is looking down at the water below. He is about five foot nine with brown hair. He is wearing warn out clothing. He looks either way. He sees that there is no one approaching and lifts his leg to get over to the other side. He is visually distraught.
SCENE 2 MARKET PLACE EXT… DAY
The screen displays a busy market. People are selling all sorts of products such as Groceries, household materials, entertainment products etc. The camera moves in to focus on to Adam Parkinson. A young man in his twenties with black hair. He is about six feet tall and pretty skinny. Adam seems to be uneasy as he walks through the crowd.
MARKET SALESMAN
Bananas five for a pound. Bananas get your Bananas here
Adam walks up towards the Salesman and hands over the money An old looking man comes up from behind and taps him on the shoulder. Adam turns to acknowledge the man.
NICOLAS
My, my name is nick, Nicolas
ADAM
Huh what do you want applause man?
NICOLAS
You must listen to me, You no time. they come. They come for you.
ADAM
Look I haven't any time for your small talk old man I have to get back home.
Adam turns to the market salesman who passes him his goods. Nicolas grabs hold of Adams head with considerable strength. Shaking it as he speaks.
NICOLAS
You do not see Adam, You haven't much time. They will kill you.
ADAM
How the hell do you know my name.
NICOLAS
I know everything about you Adam. I see things.
ADAM
You're drunk or something. Don't come near me again.
Adam pushes Nicolas forcing him to release his grip. He then turns and runs in the Opposite direction.
NICOLAS
I am trying to help. Please you must listen to me.
Adam refuses to acknowledge Nick and continues walking.
SCENE 3 ADAMS HOUSE INT… DAY
Adam is sitting in his front room with his friends Patrick and Anthony. Patrick is Large build with short brown hair. He is wearing a football T shirt. Anthony is small with blond hair. Adam is smoking a rolled cigarette.
PATRICK
Dude are you going to pass that smoke or am I going to have to role my own.
ADAM
In a minute.
ANTHONY
What the hell is wrong with you today man you look freaked.
ADAM
Something freaky happened to me in town today that's all.
Adam leans over and passes the cigarette over to Patrick.
ANTHONY
So are you going to keep us in suspense or are you going to tell us why your walking round with a face like a horses backside.
ADAM
Some old guy came up to me in the market today. Told me that my life was in danger. Give me the spooks man he knew my name and everything.
PATRICK
(Laughs) Your so full of shit AD, I know why your freaked, Its because you owe Jim Sulivan drug money and have no way to pay it back. Now he wants your head.
ADAM
Ill get Jim his fucking money ok.
Adam gets up out of his seat and walks into the next room. He returns holding a dog leed.
ADAM
I'm taking the dog for a walk. Perhaps some fresh air will clear my head.
SCENE 4 BRIDGE EXT… NIGHT
The young jumper seen earlier in the film is looking towards a car that has just pulled up. The door opens and another man comes out he is tall and looks about 45 years old. The man has bleach blond hair and is large build. He walks towards the jumper holding out his hand.
SCENE 5 COUNTRYSIDE EXT… DAY
Adam and Anthony are walking a white Dalmatian dog across the countryside. The dog is off the lead and exploring the countryside around them. Adam is walking alongside Anthony with the Dog lead in his hand.
ANTHONY
So why did you call the dog Megan?
ADAM
After an ex girlfriend of mine.
ANTHONY
Why?
ADAM
Well obviously she was my girlfriend at the time.
ANTHONY
Good I was just going to say. Strange to name a dog after your ex Girlfriend.
ADAM
The name suits her anyway. Mischievous little madam. Besides I think the dog suits the name more than my ex.
Anthony stops suddenly and looks at someone coming. The dog stops. Her ears perk up.
ADAM
Looks like there's someone coming.
ANTHONY
I don't believe this, That's Old Nick. Rumour has it that he died some time ago. He used to live in these parts.
ADAM
Why did he live in the countryside?
ANTHONY
Don't know. They say he preferred nature to mankind. apparently he didn't get along with others that well. He's coming over.
ADAM
Megan.
The dog returns to Adams side. He puts the lead around the dogs neck. Nicolas approaches.
ADAM
You, It was you who approached me in the market place today. You insisted my life was in danger
NICOLAS
And I meant it.
ADAM
How could you possibly know what is going to happen to me.
NICOLAS
The how is not important. But I assure you unless you take the time to listen to me then you will be dead by the end of the day.
SCENE 6 BRIDGE OVER RIVER EXT… NIGHT
The man from the vehicle walks up to the jumper. The young jumper looks at the man from the car in a troubled fashion.
CONRAD
Your not going to jump are you?
NICOLAS
You don't want to ask me that.
CONRAD
Why not?
NICOLAS
Look mate I am not in the mood for conversations at the moment so please do us both a favour and leave me alone.
CONRAD
Of course I will leav you alone. Once I am sure your not going to jump.
NICOLAS
What do you care if I jump.
CONRAD
Life is a precious gift young man. Why waist it at such a young age?
SCENE 7 UNIVERSITY CAMPUS. CORRIDOR INT… DAY
Adam is walking through the corridor with Patrick and Anthony. All are carrying bags on their backs. Adam looks noticeably worried.
PATRICK
So you seen old Nick in the forest. I honestly didn't realise he was still alive.
ADAM
It was freaky, he warned me that my life is in danger once again.
ANTHONY
Do you think he is planning something?
PATRICK
Old Nick is far from the violent type. Perhaps he overheard Jim Sulivan talking or something. How the hell did you end up owing Jim so much money anyway.
ADAM
It's a long story. Look I have to go to a lecture. We can discuss this when I have finished.
PATRICK
Ok I tell you what, He told you it was going to happen tonight. So we will stay in a public place if anything happens There will be people around to stop it. Meet you in the student bar at five.
ANTHONY
Call us at the first sign of trouble.
ADAM
Ok (sigh) I'll catch you later.
Adam turns away heads down the adjacent corridor out of the sight range of his friends. A hand comes out from behind a door of a class room and drags him in. It is Jim Sulivan. He is about six foot three with shaved hair. Jim grabs Adam around the neck and places a knife to his throat. Adam struggles to free himself from Jims grip.
JIM
You owe me £500 Adam. I have grown very impaciant at your reluctancy to give it back.
ADAM
(Struggling to breath under jims grip) I don't have it yet. I will have it soon.
JIM
Tonight, you will have the money tonight otherwise…
Jim runs the knife across Adams throat with little force. He then releases him and kicks him as he falls to the ground.
JIM
Tonight Adam, I get tired of waiting
Jim exits the class room. Adam struggles to his feet. He notices something in the window. It is Nicolas, he has been watching the whole incident. Nicolas becomes aware that Adam has seen him and runs in the opposite direction. Adam runs out of the classroom door. He proceeds down the corridor holding his chest. He walks through a set of double doors and to the outside of the building. He stops and looks around. He can see Nicolas in the distance so decides to follow him.
SCENE 8 RAILWAY STATION EXT… DAY
Adam runs up a flight of steps and round a corner. He sees Nicolas waiting on a bench ahead of him. He walks towards him.
ADAM
How did you know that my life was in danger?
NICOLAS
You wouldn't believe me if I told you.
ADAM
You were following me. Did you overhear Sulivan talking or something.
NICOLAS
No
ADAM
(Raises his voice) You were following me. I saw you just after Sulivan attacked me. You were looking through the window.
NICOLAS
I am trying to protect you.
ADAM
What has my well being have to do with you?
NICOLAS
I have my reasons.
ADAM
Then tell me, tell me what you know.
NICOLAS
If you go back to your house at Five thirty tonight you will be surprised by Jim Sulivan and some of his friends.
(The screen shows Adam walking into his house).
NICOLAS (VOICEOVER)
He has come to rob your house of your possessions because of the money you owe him. You will try and stop him.
(The screen shows Adam entering his house clearly surprised by jim and two of his friends. He strikes Jim but Jim hits back).
NICOLAS (VOICEOVER)
There will be a struggle and you will be overpowered by Jims friends. Needless to say you will not survive.
(Jims friends attack Adam with a knife, Adams throat is cut and he is left lying on the floor.)
ADAM
And you say if I don't go back to my house tonight then I can avoid this fate.
Nicolas nods.
ADAM
There is one thing I don't understand, how you know this. Why are you so certain this is going to happen to me, or to the point why the hell do you care?
NICOLAS
Do you believe in reincarnation?
ADAM
I never thought about it.
NICOLAS
I had a very good friend once, Conrad Heartson. saved me from my demise. I believed that I had no role to play in life. I was about to jump off a bridge but fate had it that he was driving past and decided to stop me.
ADAM
Why were you going to jump?
NICOLAS
My mother left me when I was very young. My father didn't give a shit weather I lived or died. Most of my Childhood and teenage life I spent in and out of foster care. One day it became too much so I decided to take the plunge.
ADAM
That's when you met Conrad.
NICOLAS
For the first time in my troubled lifetime I had found a friend. He was considerably older than I was but we got on grate. For the first time in my life I had found real happiness. After some time he became a sort of Father figure to me.
ADAM
What happened to him?
NICOLAS
He died of Natural causes five years ago.
ADAM
I'm sorry.
SCENE 9 STUDENT BAR INT… DAY
The student bar is pretty crowded. Adam walks in and proceeds straight towards the bar. He passes Patrick who is sitting at a table with a pint. The two make eye contact and Adam continues walking. He looks at his watch which displays the time 5.15.
NICOLAS (VOICEOVER)
Many people have discussed the possibility of returning to life after you have passed on. I believe as well as Conrad did that Ones soal goes on to an afterlife but a pinch of it stays here. It joins with the soal of another to gain new experiences. I believe that some of Conrad is in you.
Adam buys a drink from the bar and retreats to Patricks table.
NICOLAS (VOICEOVER)
Conrad warned me of your fate in a dream the other night. Since then I have been following you. Trying to find out why I was warned of the fate of someone I never knew.
Adam sits down with his drink in his hand. He looks at his watch it shows the time as 5. 20
ADAM
Sorry I am late.
PATRICK
Don't worry its only been twenty minutes.
ADAM
Where's Anthony?
PATRICK
He had to run back to the house.
Adam gets up from the table sharply and starts moving towards the door.
ADAM
We have to go get him.
PATRICK
What?
ADAM
I have no time to explain, hurry we have to go now.
Patrick puts down his pint and follows Adam out of the bar.
SCENE 10 ADAMS HOUSE INT… DAY
Jim Sulivan is in Adams house with two of his friends Arther and Tony. Arther is Darks skinned and has a thick black beard. Tony Is large build with thick jet black hair. Arther is holding a television. The door opens and Anthony enters with a look of shock on his face.
SCENE 11 OUTSIDE THE BAR EXT… DAY
Adam runs out of the entrance to the student bar. Down the road towards the nearest street. Patrick follows close behind.
SCENE 12 ADAMS HOUSE INT… DAY
Anthony is fighting with Jim and his two thugs. He is overpowered and forced to the floor. Arther brandishes a knife and holds it to his throat. Then out of nowhere a hand comes and grabs the knife out of Arther's hand. It is Nicolas. Jim goes to attack him but Nicolas overpowers him. Tony tries to make the save but he is stopped by a third man. It is Conrad. Anthony looks shocked to see them both.
SCENE 13 A STREET EXT… DAY
Adam and Patrick run down the street next to the pub. The camera follows them as they continue on their way to Adams house.
SCENE 14 ADAMS HOUSE INT… DAY
Anthony is still on the floor. Conrad and Nicolas fight off the three thugs. Conrad knocks Jim to the floor then hits Tony. Nicolas has an exchange of punches with Arther. Nicolas overpowers Arther and tackles him to the ground. All three of the thugs lie unconscious on the floor. Anthony realises this and struggles to his feet Nicolas and Conrad are gone. Adam and Patrick burst in through the door.
ADAM
Anthony are you ok?
Patrick walks over to each of the three thugs and checks their pulse in turn.
ANTHONY
Yes I think.
ADAM
Are they alive?
PATRICK
Yes, but I had better call the police and an Ambulance.
Patrick takes a mobile phone from his pocket and dials 999.
ANTHONY
Old nick was here with another man. They were the ones who fought off these lot.
ADAM
Where is he?
Patrick begins talking on the mobile phone.
PATRICK
Yes I would like the police and an ambulance to 12 Queens road please.
ADAM
Where are they?
ANTHONY
I don't know they just sort of disappeared. Did you see them as you entered?
ADAM
No the street is empty.
Patrick puts the phone back into his pocket and walks over to Anthony. A siren can be heard in the distance.
ADAM (VOICEOVER)
I have no explanation of what happened today. I cannot begin to comprehend what happened to my friend in this house. He suffered a fate that should be mine. Weeks later we found information that Nicolas and Conrad were killed in a car crash five years ago. Today has left us all understandably confused.
There is a knock on the door. Patrick goes to answer.
ADAM
Jim Sulivan has been forbidden from coming anywhere near us. He awaits trial for breaking and entering. He has also been charged with assault. I cannot help thinking about Nicolas. Was he real? I find it hard to believe that today was real. Was what he said about reincarnation real? Was what he said about me real? I'm afraid these are answers to questions that ill never find out.
