Choke cherries
Mouse
22 Jun 2004
Wild cherries, so red they are almost black. They hang in long clusters and are the size of currents. The tree leans over my road, shiny oval leaves sheltering the cherries and me from the soft rain as I reach overhead to pick them. The sky is growing darker and I am having trouble seeing the red purple of the unripe cherries, I bite into the sour fruit and spit out the pit. I hear a whistle like snort of a deer in the woods and smile to myself. I draw down a branch and pick from higher in the tree till my bowl is half filled and head home to make something of my sweet prize.
They are called choke cherries, they're supposed to be sour but they're quite sweet. Perhaps from the rain this season.
